New techniques for sperm selection in fertility treatment. Using the principle of separating sperm that is undergoing apoptosis process (programmed cell death), which is one of the reasons for the IVF/ICSI failure.
Process
MACS technique is done by attaching magnet in solution that is able to bind with the Phosphatidylserine (PS) in cell membrane.
When sperm passes through column with magnetic stripe, sperm that has abnormal cell membranes or sperm that entering apoptosis process will attach to the magnet. The normal sperm will pass through the column and can be used in IVF/ICSI/IMSI.
Men with high sperm DNA fragmentation index
Previous failed IVF/ICSI/IMSI cycle.
MACS technique will select for normal sperm to use for fertilization. This may increase chance of fertilization and improve the quality of the embryo after IVF/ICSI/IMSI.
