Understanding Vaccines: Protecting Health Through Prevention

Vaccination is a cornerstone of public health, safeguarding individuals and communities from a range of preventable diseases. Here's some important information about various vaccines and their significance: 

1. BCG Vaccine for Tuberculosis: 

The BCG vaccine is effective in preventing disseminated tuberculosis and meningeal tuberculosis in young children. However, it is not a guarantee against pulmonary tuberculosis, which remains a complex disease. 

2. Diphtheria, Tetanus, and Pertussis Vaccine (DTaP): 

• Common side effects of this vaccine include high fever, crying, and mild discomfort. These reactions typically occur within 48 hours after vaccination. 

• The use of the acellular pertussis vaccine reduces the risk of severe side effects. 

• Severe brain symptoms, known as encephalopathy, occurring within 7 days of vaccination, are rare but contraindications for any pertussis vaccine. Severe allergic reactions (Anaphylaxis) also contraindicate receiving any diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis vaccine. 

3. Polio Vaccination: 

The oral polio vaccine (OPV) contains polio strains 1 and 3. Polio strain 2 is no longer found, but to prevent potential outbreaks, the injectable polio vaccine (IPV) containing all 3 strains is given at 4 months of age and up. 

4. Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR) Vaccine: 

The first dose of MMR is recommended at 9 months - 1 year of age. Vaccination too early may not stimulate sufficient immunity due to maternal antibodies. 

A second dose is given at age 2 years and 6 months. 

5. Japanese Encephalitis (JE) Vaccine: 

The current JE encephalitis vaccine uses weakened viruses and requires 2 injections. It is safer with fewer side effects than the original inactivated vaccine. 

It is contraindicated for immunocompromised individuals. 

6. HPV Vaccine: 

• The HPV vaccine can be administered to boys and is effective in preventing rectal cancer, as well as genital and anal warts. 

• While not included as a basic vaccine for Thai boys, it offers important protection. 

7. Influenza Vaccine: 

• The influenza vaccine protects against four strains: A/H1N1, A/H3N2, and two strains of influenza B virus. 

• Annual influenza vaccination is recommended to reduce the risk of seasonal flu and its complications.
