Los Angeles — U.S. researchers have found that adults living in rural communities have higher rates of heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity, and diabetes, as well as poorer heart health compared to those living in urban areas. They also identified factors that may contribute to these differences.

A study funded by the U.S. National Institutes of Health indicated that across all age groups, the disparities in high blood pressure, obesity, and diabetes were most pronounced among adults aged 20-39 living in rural areas compared to their urban counterparts.

Researchers analyzed data from over 27,000 adults who participated in the U.S. National Health Survey in 2022 to examine geographical differences in the prevalence of heart disease and cardiovascular risk factors such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and obesity.

The study found that factors such as income level, education, food security, and homeownership play a significant role in the higher rates of heart disease, high blood pressure, and diabetes in rural areas.
