Dhaka — The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) in Bangladesh reported a record high of 10 dengue-related deaths  marking the highest single-day toll and bringing the total number of deaths to 310.

According to reports, 1,348 new dengue cases were recorded in the past 24 hours as of 8:00 a.m. local time on Saturday (Nov. 2), raising the total number of dengue cases in Bangladesh this year to 63,165. Monthly fatalities included 12 in July, 27 in August, 80 in September, and 134 in October.

In 2023, Bangladesh experienced an annual death toll of 1,705 from dengue, its highest on record, in contrast to 281 fatalities in 2022 and 179 in 2019.

Dengue is a viral illness transmitted through the bite of infected Aedes mosquitoes, causing acute symptoms such as headaches, high fever, fatigue, severe muscle and joint pain, swollen lymph nodes, vomiting, and skin rash.

To combat the rising number of dengue cases, Bangladeshi health officials have increased measures to monitor mosquito breeding and prevent the spread of larvae.
