The Faculty of Medicine Ramathibodi Hospital, Mahidol University, in collaboration with Samitivej Hospital Group, organized the “Cell Therapy & Gene Therapy Symposium 2025” from September 5–7, 2025, at Samitivej Srinakarin Hospital and Mövenpick BDMS Wellness Resort, Bangkok.

This landmark event marked the first of its kind in ASEAN, presenting breakthrough innovations in treating leukemia and lymphoma through Cell and Gene Therapy. The cutting-edge approach involves enhancing patients’ immune cells using their own blood to directly attack cancer cells—offering up to a 70% cure rate while reducing treatment costs by more than five times.

During the symposium, Thai and international experts exchanged knowledge on:

   - Stem cell transplantation for thalassemia patients

   - CAR T-cell therapy for drug-resistant leukemia and lymphoma

   - Advances in gene therapy

   - Management of complications and world-class clinical research outcomes

Keynote lectures featured leading global experts including Prof. Philippe Leboulch of Paris-Saclay University and Harvard University, a pioneer in gene therapy for beta-thalassemia, and Prof. Hideki Marumatsu of Nagoya University, Japan, a specialist in aplastic anemia and bone marrow failure syndromes.

According to medical experts, these advancements open new treatment pathways beyond conventional chemotherapy, such as haploidentical stem cell transplantation using stem cells from parents or relatives—achieving a 100% one-year survival rate in children. Meanwhile, CAR T-cell therapy offers renewed hope for patients unresponsive to existing treatments, significantly improving survival outcomes.

The symposium underscored the power of public-private collaboration in elevating Thailand’s medical standards to an international level, strengthening access to advanced treatment, and reinforcing the country’s vision to become a Medical Hub of Asia. By sharing expertise and fostering innovation, the initiative not only enhances the capacity of Thai medical professionals but also gives patients across the region faster, safer access to life-saving therapies.
