Severe Drug Allergic Reactions: Steven-Johnson Syndrome (SJS) or Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (TEN) from These Medications

Medications: Allopurinol, Carbamazepine, Phenytoin, Phenobarbital, Abacavir

Possible abnormalities that may occur after using these medications within the first 3 months

Possible Drug Allergy Symptoms:

1.Swelling of the face

2.Swollen eyes with rashes

3.Hives and difficulty breathing

Severe Drug Allergy Symptoms:

1.Fever

2.Mouth sores

3.Eye inflammation

4.Skin peeling

These medications are effective, beneficial, and inexpensive, but there have been reports of severe allergic reactions in Thai people. Studies show that Asians have a significantly higher risk of drug allergies, approximately 55 times more than other ethnicities. This condition can be dangerous, leading to disability or even death. Nowadays, genetic testing is available to predict this risk with high accuracy. You can continue taking the medication, as it is essential for treatment, but it is crucial to monitor for any allergic reactions after a few days of use.

Medical Tourism in Thailand: Where Getting Well Feels Like the Trip of a Lifetime
