Vitamin Deficiency

Vitamins act like essential components that help the body function properly. Today, vitamin deficiency is increasingly common due to various causes. Although it may not always show noticeable symptoms, in preventive and anti-aging medicine, vitamin deficiency can have significant negative effects on the body, such as weakening the immune system and increasing the risk of various diseases.
It is therefore recommended to undergo health check-ups to analyze nutrient levels. Measuring vitamins and minerals can help assess the body’s balance or identify deficiencies through modern laboratory testing, including blood tests, urine tests, or DNA analysis.
Common Vitamin Deficiencies in Thailand
Vitamin B1 Deficiency (Thiamine Deficiency)
Early symptoms include numbness in the hands and feet, fatigue, easy exhaustion, loss of appetite, bloating, constipation, and frequent muscle cramps. In severe cases, it can lead to muscle weakness, irregular heartbeat, shortness of breath, enlarged heart, heart failure, and even death.
However, vitamin B1 deficiency can be prevented by consuming foods rich in vitamin B, such as brown rice and legumes (e.g., mung beans, red beans, soybeans, and peanuts).
Common causes of vitamin B1 deficiency include intense physical activity, consumption of foods that destroy vitamin B1 (such as raw foods), infections, and certain medical conditions that lead to vitamin loss, including chronic alcoholism, kidney failure requiring dialysis, and hyperthyroidism.
Vitamin D Deficiency
Vitamin D deficiency is commonly found in older adults aged 60 and above, menopausal individuals, and postmenopausal women. It increases the risk of osteoporosis.
Vitamin D plays a crucial role in regulating hormones that affect calcium loss from bones. It also helps the body absorb calcium into the bones and supports muscle strength, thereby helping prevent osteoporosis.
Causes of Vitamin D Deficiency
Vitamin D deficiency can result from insufficient dietary intake, such as in individuals following vegetarian diets, or from reduced nutrient absorption with aging. In addition, limited sun exposure decreases the skin’s ability to synthesize vitamin D.
According to statistics, many people in Thailand also experience deficiencies in other vitamins and minerals, including vitamins A, C, E, calcium, folic acid, magnesium, potassium, selenium, and zinc. These nutrients play essential roles in the nervous system, red blood cell production, and immune function.
